Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has joined the chorus of voices criticizing Apple’s recent changes to its App Store rules, describing them as “onerous” and questioning their viability for developers.
The Background of Apple’s Changes
Apple’s alterations to its app distribution model were made in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. These changes will permit developers, for the first time, to develop and distribute apps through third-party marketplaces once iOS 17.4 is rolled out.
Zuckerberg’s Critique
During a recent call with analysts, Zuckerberg expressed skepticism about Apple’s modifications, suggesting that they impose significant burdens on developers. He remarked that he would be “very surprised” if any developer opted to utilize the alternative app stores provided by Apple.
Discordance with Digital Markets Act
Zuckerberg highlighted that Apple’s new rules appear to contradict the principles outlined in the Digital Markets Act. He emphasized the challenges posed by these changes, indicating that it would be challenging for any entity, including Meta, to seriously consider participating under such conditions.
Apple’s Perspective
Apple defended its stance, stating that it is implementing safeguards to protect EU users from potential threats such as malware, scams, and functionality issues with apps. However, it acknowledged that these protections do not entirely eliminate the new challenges introduced by the Digital Markets Act.
Other Critics
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek and Xbox president Sarah Bond have also voiced their discontent with Apple’s policy changes. Ek described Apple’s actions as a “new low,” while Bond labeled it a “step in the wrong direction,” expressing hope that Apple would heed feedback on its proposed plan.
As the debate surrounding Apple’s App Store rules intensifies, industry leaders like Zuckerberg are adding their perspectives, contributing to the ongoing discussion about the balance between platform control and developer autonomy.
