Clerk, a startup focused on providing authentication and user management solutions for app developers, has secured $30 million in a Series B funding round led by CRV. The round also saw participation from notable investors such as Stripe, Andreessen Horowitz, and Madrona.
Expansion Plans
With the latest funding, Clerk’s total raised capital stands at $55.5 million. According to Colin Sidoti, co-founder and CEO of Clerk, the funds will be utilized to expand Clerk’s services beyond authentication into authorization. Authorization involves determining the permissions granted to users, going beyond just identifying their identities.
Evolution of Clerk
Founded in March 2019 by Colin and Braden Sidoti, both engineers with backgrounds in prestigious institutions and tech companies, Clerk offers a range of developer tools for authentication. Their solutions include embeddable UIs, APIs, and admin dashboards designed to streamline the authentication and user management process for developers.
Approach to Authentication
Clerk’s approach to authentication aims to address the challenges faced by software companies in outsourcing authentication and authorization. While these processes are essential for every software application, they have been slow to be outsourced due to their tight integration with the application’s core functionalities. Clerk’s solution attempts to redefine authentication by offering a flexible approach that adapts to different application needs.
Strategic Partnership with Stripe
The investment from Stripe, a leading payment processing platform, marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between Clerk and Stripe. Clerk plans to integrate Stripe Billing into its platform to determine user permissions based on their subscription plans. This integration will enhance Clerk’s authorization solution, allowing developers to manage user access more effectively.
Growth and Competition
Clerk, which serves around 1,300 paying customers and manages 16 million users, aims to expand its workforce from 55 to 80 employees by the end of the year. The company faces competition from other startups in the authentication space, such as Descope, Stytch, and WorkOS. Despite the competition, Clerk anticipates continued growth and acceleration in the coming years, building on its success in 2023.
In summary, Clerk’s latest funding round and strategic partnership with Stripe position the company for further expansion and innovation in the authentication and user management space, empowering developers to build secure and scalable applications.
