The Mahadev App Controversy: An Overview

The Mahadev App, a live betting platform promoted by Ravi Uppal and Sourabh Chandrakar, has stirred controversy, allegedly earning Rs 5,000 crore through illicit means. The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) initiated an investigation after suspicions were raised due to Sourabh Chandrakar’s extravagant Rs 250-crore wedding in the United Arab Emirates.

Involvement of Ranbir Kapoor

Hindi film actor Ranbir Kapoor has been dragged into the investigation due to his association with the Mahadev App. The ED issued a summons for Kapoor on October 6, suspecting that the payment he received from the app promoters might be linked to the illicit proceeds.

Ban on Illegal Betting Apps

Following the investigation into the Mahadev App, the Indian government has issued blocking orders against 22 illegal betting platforms, including Mahadev Book Online and Reddyannaprestopro.

Functionality of the Mahadev App

The Mahadev Book App, before its ban, facilitated live betting on various sports like cricket, football, and tennis in India. It operated through multiple websites and promoted betting through advertisements.

Political Warfare: BJP vs. Congress

The controversy has sparked a political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress as the Chhattisgarh elections loom closer. While the BJP accuses Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of being complicit in the scam, the Congress alleges that the BJP government failed to act promptly despite prior warnings.

Allegations Against CM Baghel

Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT Cell chief, has accused Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of having knowledge about the scam and claims that the betting app operated under his police’s patronage.

ED’s Findings

The ED has disclosed that Asim Das, dispatched from the UAE, delivered a significant cash sum for the election expenses of the ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh. Additionally, the ED alleges that the Mahadev App promoters paid Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel Rs 508 crore.

The Mahadev App saga continues to unravel as investigations progress, shedding light on the intricate web of corruption and political entanglements.
