WhatsApp, with over 500 million users in India, is one of the country’s most popular messaging platforms, offering not only text chats but also voice and video calling capabilities.
Rise of Spam Calls
While voice calling on WhatsApp provides a convenient way to connect globally without charges, it has recently become a target for scammers. Indian users have reported a surge in spam calls from international numbers, prompting concerns and even government notices to WhatsApp.
Despite WhatsApp’s efforts to address the issue, it’s estimated that only about half of the spam calls can be effectively blocked at present.
Silencing Unknown Calls
While there’s currently no direct way to prevent spammers from calling on WhatsApp, you can silence calls from unknown numbers. Here’s how:
- Open WhatsApp on your smartphone and access the menu by clicking on the three dots.
- Navigate to “Settings.”
- Select “Privacy” and then tap on “Calls.”
- Enable the toggle to silence unknown calls on WhatsApp.
Considerations
It’s important to note that silencing unknown calls will mute all calls from numbers not saved in your contacts. This means you may miss important calls if you haven’t saved the caller’s number. Additionally, silencing unknown calls won’t prevent spammers from dialing your number; it simply suppresses notifications for such calls.
While WhatsApp is working on solutions to address spam calls more effectively, silencing unknown calls offers a temporary measure to mitigate the inconvenience caused by spam calls.
