In a collaborative effort between the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the not-for-profit organization New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL), a pioneering tennis and education center emerged as a year-round public asset within the expansive Crotona Park in the South Bronx.
Redefining Recreation
The project builds upon the foundation of twenty existing public tennis courts, elevating the site into a cutting-edge facility featuring a 12,750 square foot clubhouse and educational hub, alongside two world-class stadium exhibition courts and 20 outdoor hard courts. Bleacher seating for 960 spectators and a raised viewing bridge between courts further enhance the spectator experience. The clubhouse integrates amenities typical of high-end tennis clubs with classrooms and community spaces, fostering both sportsmanship and educational pursuits.
Harmonizing with Nature
To harmonize with the park’s natural surroundings, the building and stadium courts are partially submerged, minimizing their visual impact and harnessing geothermal heating and cooling. This design preserves the park’s recreational ambiance while providing a dedicated space for tennis and learning. Utilizing post-tensioned concrete surpassing USTA standards ensures durability and longevity, addressing maintenance concerns associated with traditional asphalt courts.
Embracing Innovation
The facility’s design revolves around versatility and accessibility, symbolized by a series of shifting planes and viewing platforms. The clubhouse’s distinctive architecture creates a seamless transition from the park to the bustling activity within, fostering a sense of connection and engagement. Elevated viewing areas offer unobstructed vistas of both the courts and the surrounding parkland, enhancing the visitor experience.
Fostering Excellence
As a testament to its success, the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning has earned recognition from the International Tennis Federation as an Outstanding Tennis Facility. Serving as the flagship for NYJTL, it hosts prestigious tournaments such as the Mayor’s Cup and USTA qualifying events, solidifying its status as a premier tennis destination. Additionally, it has become the home venue for the New York Empire matches in Billie Jean King’s World Team Tennis franchise.
Through innovative design and collaborative partnerships, the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning stands as a beacon of sporting excellence and community empowerment, enriching the cultural landscape of New York City and inspiring future generations of athletes and scholars alike.
