Exploring Xi’an’s Cultural Essence

In response to HARMAY’s invitation, nihilii studio embarked on a creative endeavor to infuse Xi’an’s rich cultural heritage into the design of their store in Xiaozhai, Shaanxi Province. Drawing inspiration from the city’s esteemed history as the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, the architects aimed to encapsulate the distinctive elements of Xi’an’s architectural landscape.

Blending Tradition with Innovation

The design team ingeniously incorporated iconic architectural motifs such as the “city wall,” “arrow tower,” “corner tower,” and “Yuqiang” into the store’s layout. These elements were seamlessly integrated with industrial-style decor, creating a unique fusion of tradition and innovation that characterizes HARMAY’s aesthetic.

Honoring Local Culture

Interpreting HARMAY’s commitment to honoring local culture, the store’s facade was meticulously crafted using black aluminum plates and Low-E glass, arranged in a scale-like module to allow ample natural light to illuminate the interior. Inside, the design ethos reflects HARMAY’s distinct warehouse-style retail concept, with asymmetrical steel plate stairs serving as a focal point between floors.

Creating Visual Intrigue

The deliberate architectural choice of asymmetrical stairs not only creates visual intrigue but also evokes a sense of spatial dynamism reminiscent of the ancient city’s turret design. As shoppers ascend the stairs, they are greeted with a captivating retrospective view, drawing their attention to the myriad of products displayed on the first floor.

Material Selection and Spatial Narrative

In terms of materials, the architects opted for recycled old blue bricks, clay bricks, and glass bricks, seamlessly integrating them to create a visually stimulating interior environment. Embracing the versatility of brick designs with diverse characteristics, the design team employed a masonry approach to deepen the spatial narrative, resulting in a captivating and immersive retail experience.

A Place of Cultural Resonance

Beyond catering to the functional requirements of a retail space, the project aspires to deepen its connection with the urban fabric of Xi’an. By exploring and embracing the locality’s cultural nuances, the store seeks to transcend its role as a mere retail outlet and become a place of resonance and cultural significance within the community.
